Remembering “Fantasy of an East Williamsburg Loft as an Affordable Housing Unit…What is Affordability?” (2007)

It was part of an really amazing installation by Group 238 at Grace Exhibition Space (840 Broadway) during the 2007 Bushwick Open Studios

See the complete installation here.

I remember how sparse and ridiculous it appeared at first yet it felt authentic. It was as if the artists had sketched their idea in strips of canvas, piping, wiring and a ladder. When I walking through the installation I remember being able to "feel" it–the alienation and poverty–more than see it.

It felt as ephemeral as a north Brooklyn loft in disrepair.
