“One of the great theorists and technicians of the 1950s New York School of Pollock, de Kooning, Rothko, Newman, and others, Stillman’s name disappeared from those ranks thanks to a combination of being a generation older than those artists and his relocation to Mexico after an eye hemorrhage in 1955, just as the Abstract Expressionists began to capture mainstream attention.” I don’t know about “one of the great theorists” but Stillman definitely warants a second look.

Hi, Hrag,
Just to clarify about Ary Stillman as “one of the great theorists” of that school–Clement Greenberg, the critic who pretty much made Pollock, remembered things Stillman said at gatherings and roundtable discussions 20 years later, so he definitely left an impression.
Thanks for reading.
