"The mystery is why the Times does not make more of its advantageous position. It ought to have a savvy and sophisticated view of the inner workings of the art market. But instead it affects a one-note tone somewhat at odds with the idea of an art market in general." Good question.

I think it's silly to be against photography in museums since in our culture the electronic image is crucial to contemporary experience of anything. Never mind that any museum that doesn't allow photography will suffer because it will not be welcoming to most people who may choose to experience things through the lens of their camera and the institutions will not benefit from the inevitable viral conversations that take place on & offline as people share images with friends. Is it possible to go overboard with photography in museums, sure, but prohibition is not a good option.
I should also mention that as an art critic and art lover I adore taking digital images of art. It does help me experience the work in a different way. -
